Two unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight in north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district on Thursday, police said.
The gunfight erupted at Khumriyal Lolab, over 110 km from Srinagar, when joint teams of forces launched a cordon and search after input about militants’ presence.
“As joint teams approached the suspected area, the hiding militants opened fire triggering a gunfight. In the gunfight that followed two militants were killed,” a police officer said. The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained.
The operation is still under way in the area.
Security forces have also recovered arms from the gunfight site.
It could not be established whether the slain militants were fresh infiltrators or were hiding in the area.
