Nine people have been reported dead in a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall in three places Tamenglong district in Manipur.
According to the initial reports, the landslide occurred in the intermittent period of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a tweet that the rescue operations were underway. Jitendra Singh, who is the Minister of State for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, tweeted that he was “saddened” to hear the news about the deaths due to the landslides.
Manipur has been reeling under heavy rains for over a month now. The Imphal and Nambul rivers have been flowing above their capacity due to the incessant rains.
The parts most hit by the floods were the areas and districts in Imphal East as the rivers continue to overflow in the district according to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department(IFCD). IMD and MeT have said that heavy to very heavy rainfall can be expected in Manipur in the coming days.
