Ahead of the Jind byelection, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala has announced that his party would introduce 10-point programme for the welfare of SCs and poor sections of society if it formed the government in Haryana next year.

“The Congress will launch the atta-dal aur chini scheme for SC families in the state. All 15 lakh Dalit families will get 20-kg flour at the rate of Rs2 per kg, 2-kg pulses for Rs20 per kg and 1-kg sugar for Rs12,” he said this while addressing the “Garib Adhikar” rally here on Sunday.
The Jind byelection has been necessitated because of the demise of INLD MLA Hari Chand Middha. The bypoll is likely by January.

Surjewala further said the Congress, if voted to power, would waive all water bills under the Indira Gandhi Drinking Water Scheme, appoint one SC member each in the Haryana Public Services Commission (HPSC) and the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC), fill 60,000 vacancies, abolish contract system for safai karmcharis, constitute an SC commission with a member each from Dhanak and Oadh communities, survey all SC localities for ensuring a toilet in each household and repair all SC “chaupals”.

The Kaithal MLA said the Congress government would provide Rs1,500 monthly scholarship to SC students pursuing graduation and post-graduation, Rs2,500 to SC engineering students, and Rs5,000 to those pursuing MBBS and studying in IITs and IIMs.

Surjewala hit out at the BJP for allegedly undermining constitutional provisions introduced by BR Ambedkar and other members of the Constituent Assembly to deprive SCs and the poor of their rights.

Promises, if voted to power

  • To waive all water bills under the Indira Gandhi Drinking Water Scheme
  • Appoint one SC member each in the Haryana Public Services Commission and Haryana Staff Selection Commission
  • Abolish contract system for safai karmcharis
  • Constitute an SC commission with a member each from Dhanak and Oadh communities
  • Survey of all SC localities for ensuring a toilet in each household

‘Chautalas fighting for property’

On the family feud in the Chautala clan, Randeep Singh Surjewala said the infighting was only for property, which, he termed, as Ioot ka maal. “Chacha (Abhay Chautala) and bhatijas (Dushyant Chautala and Digvijay) are playing into BJP hands. None of them is opposed to the BJP. INLD MPs, including Dushyant, and MLAs had voted for BJP candidate in presidential elections against Meera Kumar,” he said.
