In what would come as a big relief for multiplex-goers, Maharashtra government has categorically clarified that Multiplex owners cannot restrict customers from carrying their own food items. State government has also announced that it will take strict action against multiplexes that stop customers from carrying their own food items for consumption.
Minister of state for Food and Civil Supplies Ravindra Chavan made the announcement in the ongoing monsoon session of the state legislature in Nagpur today. Chavan was speaking while replying to a query raised by Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde.
The government will also soon resolve the issue of higher pricing of eatables and beverages in multiplexes,” said Chavan
The Maharashtra State legislative assembly is in session in Nagpur currently.
The state govt will be coming up with a policy in next six weeks on taking action against such erring multiplexes and malls,” Chavan said. There is a central government policy on uniform pricing. Items sold in the Multiplexes will be as per MRP from August 1st Chavan added.
Raj Thackerays Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had raised the issue recently. MNS workers in Pune had assaulted Manager of a multiplex theatre for selling food items at exorbitant rates. Multiplex owners had then met Thackeray at his residence and ensured that rates of water bottles and food items like popcorns will be reasonable.
Senior members of the upper House Sanjay Dutt, Neelam Gorhe, Pravin Darekar, Anil Bhonsale too participated in the discussion on the multiplex issue.
