Locals accuse police of beating up women and firing teargas shells at them

Srinagar, July 14: Police has been accused of beating up women and firing teargas shells on them while they had gone to fetch water from a pond in Trehgam area of district kupwara in north Kashmir on Saturday.

The local residents of the mentioned area alleged that a group of women had gathered in Trehgam near Najar Mohalla to fetch water from the pond which is a routine and common practice in the area as well as across the nation. every where females form a group and go to fetch water together.

“There was no law and order problem in the area or such possibility, yet from nowhere a police party emerged and started firing teargas shells which led to suffocation of two girls,” alleged the locals of the area.

Two girls Showkeena Bano, 28, and Amina Bano, 19, suffered blackout and were taken to a nearby hospital at Trehgam for first aid and treatement.

Both girls are believed to be in stable condition now, according to Mohammad Maqbool Zargar, who is the father of Aamina, one of the alleged victims.

The parents of both the girls and other residents of the area demanded action against the police team led by SHO and his PSOs who fired tear smoke shells on women and allegedly beat them up too.

However, police has refuted all the charges and has termed all the allegations leveled as baseless and unsustantiated.
