Yamunanagar, December 16: A former municipal councillor was on Saturday night accused of distributing liquor among voters in ward number 16, from where his niece Riya was contesting the election on the INLD ticket.
On the complaint of Sushil Kumar, a case was registered against former councillor Jasbir Singh Bittu at the Gandhi Nagar police post.
Bhupinder Rana, incharge of the police post, said Bittu was arrested. He was on Sunday produced in a local court, which released him on bail.
Rana said the complainant provided him a video clip showing Bittu distributing liquor among voters. He said they booked and arrested Bittu.
In another complaint, Congress-backed candidate Islam Gurjar, contesting election from the same ward, was charged with beating up a booth agent of the BJP.
Rana said he received a complaint from Sanjay Kumar, following which a case was registered against Gurjar. “The accused has been arrested and will be produced in court on Monday,” he said.
Meanwhile, the situation became tense outside a booth of ward number 1 when a quarrel was reported between Pradeep Mittal, a relative of BJP candidate Shashi Kanta, and Congress-supported candidate Sanjay Rana, and their respective supporters.
Rana allegedly told some voters that polling had come to an end and they could not cast their vote. The BJP candidate’s supporters objected, leading to the quarrel.
Manhandling was reported, with a person or two receiving minor injuries. Rajeev Miglani, SHO, City police station, Jagadhri, said he had not received any complaint so far.
