Mumbai, December 17: A constable of the Mumbai police tried to placate two men fighting in the middle of a road but ended up getting beaten up by them. The incident took place in Grant Road area at around 9 pm on Saturday night. The two accused, identified as 36-year-old Mohammed Shaikh and 32-year-old Mohammed Razzak Shaikh, were arrested on the same night.

Constable Deepak Davre was patrolling the area near Queen Mary School at Vitthalbhai Patel Road when he saw Mohammed and Razzak fighting on the road that had disrupted the movement of vehicles. Davre then intervened and asked them to stop fighting. However, Mohammed and Razzak paid no heed. Davre then threatened them to arrest if they don’t relent.

Irked by Davre’s warning, one of the accused held his collar and punched him. He tore Davre’s shirt and broke his whistle. The helpless constable then informed the police control room through his walkie-talkie and sought immediate help, which the accused kept hitting him. Later, two constables reached the spot and rescued Davre.

“We arrested Shaikh and Razzak for assaulting a public servant, for deterring him from performing his duties and intentionally insulting him,” an officer from DB Marg police station told Hindustan Times. The accused were booked under sections 353, 332 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code. Davre, who received injuries to his face and arms, was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
