A Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed in a gunfight with the government forces in Batapora village of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday, police said.
A spokesman said that the gunfight broke out in Batapora village of Magam after a joint patrol of the armed forces launched searches in the area following inputs about the presence of militants.
During the searches, a hiding militant fired on the search party, he said.
He said the forces retaliated, triggering a gunfight. In the ensuing encounter, the militant was killed, said the spokesman. “No collateral damage was witnessed during the encounter,” he said.
“On the basis of the incriminating materials recovered, the killed militant is learnt to be a foreigner (Pakistani national) and was affiliated to the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba.
