Chandigarh, December 18: A gangster, who had jumped from a hotel to evade his arrest in a rape case, has at least 14 cases registered against him in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Police sources said the suspect, Harjot Singh Cheema, alias Harry, a resident of Sultanpur Lodhi, was facing cases in various cities of Punjab, including Moga, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Phagwara etc.

The sources added that Harjot Singh was also a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The police said that they were also checking with other states if cases were registered against the gangster there too.

A Duty Magistrate visited Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32 on Monday and remanded Harjot to judicial custody.

The suspect is, however, still admitted in the hospital due to his injuries.

Meanwhile, family members of the gangster, who had jumped from a hotel to evade his arrest in a rape case, today came to meet him at the GMCH-32. Harjot had allegedly raped a girl at Hotel Lemon Tree in the Industrial Area, Phase I, on December 15. Later, the victim informed the police about the incident.

When the cops arrived at the hotel room to arrest him, the suspect jumped from the first floor of the hotel to evade arrest, receiving serious injuries. He was possessing fake documents identifying him as Aman, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

The UT police later discovered that his real name was Harjot and he was a gangster.

Suspect had issued threats to MLA

Earlier this year, Sultanpur Lodhi Congress MLA Navtej Cheema had alleged that he had received threats from two gangsters of his native Bussowal village. Cheema had alleged that Amarveer Lalli and Harjot Singh, who were brothers, had issued threats to him.
