Amritsar, October 22: Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has been named the acting jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs.
The SGPC executive body accepted the resignation of Giani Gurbachan Singh at a meeting held at the SGPC headquarters here on Monday.
Giani Gurbachan Singh had submitted his resignation citing health reasons.
SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal said Giani Harpreet Singh had been given the additional charge of the Akal Takht.
Giani Harpreet Singh, who is in his forties, hails from Gidderbaha in Muktsar district. He is probably the youngest ever to occupy the position. He is pursuing his PhD from Punjabi University on ‘Comparative Study of Religious Teachings of Quran and Guru Granth Sahib’.
