Militant killed in ongoing gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kokernag; civilian injured in clashes

A militant was killed in an ongoing gunfight between militants and the government forces in Kokernag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday. A civilian was injured in clashes near the site of the gunfight.

Reports said a joint team of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the army cordoned off Gadol village of Vailoo area of Kokernag around.

SSP Anantnag Altaf Khan, according to news agency, said search operation was launched in the area following “specific inputs” about the presence of some militants.

“Contact has been established with the hiding militants at Gadol and the operation is going on,” he said.
Quoting official sources, the report said that two to three militants are believed to have been trapped.

“Body of a militant has been recovered from the site of the gunfight,” said an official. The identity of the slain was not immediately known.
Authorities have snapped Internet service in parts of Anantnag district in the wake of the gunfight.

Meanwhile, a civilian was injured during clashes with the forces near the site of the gunfight in Gadol village.

The injured, identified as Yawar Ahmad, was brought to district hospital Anantnag for treatment. A doctor treating him said Ahmad has suffered a bullet injury in the back of his head.
