Delhi auto driver becomes unwitting accomplice to theft, lynched by mob

In West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area, a mob of 50 people, brutally thrashed three who were allegedly running away after stealing an electronic battery. One succumbed to his injuries. According to information, the incident took place on Saturday night.

A senior police official said that the deceased was identified as Avinash Kumar, an autorickshaw driver.

The injured were identified as Maniram and Prakash. They are undergoing treatment and their condition is stated to be critical.

“Avinash Kumar, the auto driver was hired by two people. After reaching Uttam Nagar, they got off the auto and asked Avinash to wait. Meanwhile, Avinash went to urinate. When he returned, he saw a mob had gathered and his passengers were being brutally thrashed,” said a senior police official.

Avinash tried to run, but was caught and mercilessly thrashed too. The three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where Avinash died.

The police have lodged a case under Section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide) of Indian Penal Code and arrested a man.
