In a strange turn of events, the body of a man who was killed about 40 years ago has been found after a fig tree grew from his stomach. Apparently, he had eaten fig hours before he died and a seed from the same grew into a tree, as per a report by the Daily Mirror.

In 1974, Ahmet Hergune was killed during a conflict between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Even though his family looked for his body in every possible area nearby, he was never found. However, the tree was found by a researcher who was confused and curious about the presence of a fig tree in the mountainous area where it is not usually found.

Shocked, the researcher found the tree coming out from a human body after digging around the tree. He raised an alarm and the police found three more bodies. As per reports, it was found that the man had been taken to a cave along with two others who were found dead. They were killed after a dynamite was thrown at them.

A hole may have been formed due to the explosion allowing light into the dark interior of the cave. This may have also allowed the fig tree to grow inside the body. In the conflict when they died, it is estimated that up to 2,00,000 other people were displaced.

Ahmet’s sister, Munur, 87, recounted her horrifying account of how they tried to search for him even years after he was gone, but “in vain”. “We used to live in a village with a population of 4,000, half Greek, half Turkish. In 1974, the disturbances began. My brother Ahmet joined the Turkish Resistance Organisation. On June 10, the Greeks took him away,” she was quoted as saying.

“They found my brother thanks to that tree,” she added.
