Chandigarh: Unidentified miscreants broke into five showrooms at Sector 46 and made off with cash on the intervening night of November 26 and 27. The incident was recorded in CCTV cameras installed at showrooms.
The thefts were reported from SCOs 57, 58, 60, 61 and 64. A security guard in the nearby market got suspicious after he saw lights in one of the showrooms turned on following which he informed the owner.
Rohit, who owns Ramesh Department Store, SCO 60, reported that his father got a call regarding the theft around 3 am after which they immediately reached the spot. “The thieves took the cash box containing around Rs 15,000,” he said.
The thieves broke the locks of the shutter and entered the showroom. There is a CCTV camera installed outside the store in which three persons are seen arriving in a black Esteem car at 2.15 am. The thieves stole the cash box from the showroom and shifted it to the car at 2.22 am. The trio then escaped from the spot at 2.45 am.
Another shop, Bansal Namkeen and Sweet Products, SCO 61, was also targeted by the thieves from where an amount of around Rs 25,000 and dry fruits worth Rs 10,000 were stolen.
A chemist shop, CMC, and Polka Bakery were also targeted by the thieves from where around Rs 15,000 and Rs 14,000 was stolen.
The thieves also struck at Prem Department Store from where they decamped with Rs 5,000. The faces of two of the thieves are seen in the footage of a CCTV camera installed inside the chemist shop.
The police were informed about the incident, who reached the spot. The matter is under investigation at the Sector 34 police station.
The police took the CCTV footage along, which is being scrutinised.
Anil Mahajan, vice-president of the market association, along with the complainants, met the SHO of the Sector 34 police station and demanded that night patrolling should be intensified in the market.
Rs 5,000 stolen from Sector 7 shop
A theft incident was also reported from Sector 7. Gagan Kakkar, owner of Volga Electricals in Sector 7, reported that thieves broke the locks of the shop and stole Rs 5,000 from the cash box on Monday night. The thieves also ransacked the shop and threw several boxes packed with electrical goods on the floor. The complainant was informed about the theft by a security guard around 2.30 am.
Three shops burgled at Ram Darbar
Thefts were reported from three shops at Ram Darbar on the intervening night of November 26 and 27. Sources said thieves struck at a barber’s shop, a chemist’s shop and one more shop. They stole Rs 2,200 from the chemist’s shop and some items from the barber’s shop. The thefts came to light in the morning following which the police were informed. The police visited the spot and initiated an investigation at the Sector 31 police station.
