Panchkula, December 27: Two car-borne miscreants, suspected to be vehicles thieves, shot at a youth in the stomach after he confronted them at Chaudhary Complex at Rally village in Sector 12-A here late last night.
The miscreants, who were allegedly stealing a two-wheeler, managed to flee from the spot after hitting a Gypsy of the SHO of the Sector 14 police station that was crossing from near the spot. The assailants also opened fire at Navneet, cousin of the victim, but he escaped unhurt.
The victim, Rohit Nain, was taken to the Civil Hospital from where doctors referred him to the PGI, where his condition is stated to be serious.
A case has been registered against unidentified persons at the Sector 14 police station. Cops have also alerted the police in HP, Punjab and Chandigarh. The police recovered three shells from the spot.
The incident occurred between 12.15 am and 12.30 am. The police said Rohit, a native of Narwala, was living at Rally village and was working at the ambulance control room in the Sector 6 hospital. When he returned home, he saw one of the suspects stealing a bike parked outside the house. He raised the alarm after which the suspect pulled out a pistol from his bag and fired at him in the stomach. Naveen, who stays on rent with Rohit and works as a tutor at an institute in the complex, came out after hearing the noise. He picked up a brick and threw it at the assailants’ car, breaking its rear windshield. The suspects also opened fire at him, but he escaped unhurt.
Vishal Kumar, ASI, said the SHO’s Gypsy was being used for patrolling, but the SHO was not in it. While fleeing from the area, the assailants hit other cars parked in the street, besides hitting the Gypsy.
Kamaldeep Goyal, DCP, Panchkula, said the police team in the Gypsy chased the assailants, but they managed to escape taking the benefit of the darkness.
He said they had got CCTV footage of the car and some clues, and the assailants would be arrested soon.
Also opened fire on his cousin
