In a major step towards making electricity and water bill payment easier, the UT Administration is soon going to implement a QR code-based payment system.
Under the system, QR codes will be displayed at different Sampark centres. To make a payment, the consumer will have to first download a mobile app. The app will allow scanning of the QR code. Then, the app user will have to enter the account number against which the payment is to be made, the amount to be paid and the secret code.
The amount will automatically be deducted from the linked bank account. The Department of Information and Technology has made an arrangement with all major banks for the purpose.
An officer of the department said under the new system, making payment would become easier. The system would help one make the payment without cash or debit/credit card. He said the formalities for the facility were almost complete and the system would be implemented after getting the green signal from the Finance Department.
So far, the city residents had two options to pay their water and electricity bills — in cash or through debit/credit card at Sampark centre or online.
