Following a warning from China, the Arunachal Pradesh government has issued a flood warning saying that the Tsangpo/ Brahmaputra river could see huge volume of water.
The Chinese government has informed India that the Tsangpo river (Tibetan name for the mighty Brahmaputra) was flowing at a level which is the highest in 50 years, says a circular by the District Commissioner, East Siang District , Pasighat.
The letter warns that the Tsangpo has been swelling gradually since August 14. The flow was 9020 cubic metre per second (cumecs).
The river enters India and flows into Assam before entering Bangladesh and culminating it’s journey in the Bay of Bengal.
The 2,900km Brahmaputra river, known as Tsangpo in Tibet, originates at a 17,050 ft high glacier near the Kailash Mansarovar.
It travels 1,100 km eastwards across the Tibetan plateau before taking a sharp southwards turn near the 25,547 feet high Nanjagbarwa Peak to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
