Cross-border shelling: Schools closed in Poonch areas

Srinagar, April 1: Authorities on Monday ordered the closure of schools located near the Line of Control (LoC) in several areas of Poonch district in view of cross-shelling.

“Keeping in view the cross border shelling the schools falling in shelling range in Shahpur, Mandaar, Kirni, partially Qasba including HSS Islamabad shall remain closed today 1-4-2019,” said the deputy commissioner Poonch, in an order.

The armies of India and Pakistan on Monday morning exchanged heavy fire and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, leaving one person injured.

An army spokesman said that Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by shelling with mortars and firing with small arms along LoC in Shahpur and Kerni areas of Poonch district at 7:45 am.

“Indian Army is retaliating befitting,” he said.

A police official said that a civilian was injured in the shelling. “A man identified as Muhammad Sharif suffered splinter injuries in the shelling. He was shifted to district hospital Poonch for treatment,” said the official.
