Chandigarh, May 31:A 22-year-old youth, who was nabbed for ATM frauds in the city, had duped around 50 persons of Rs 10 lakh in different states. He had bought a Swift car and a motorcycle with the ill-gotten money.
A team of the Sarangpur police station had identified the fraudster as Monu Kumar, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony. He is involved in ATM fraud cases since 2016.
“The interrogation of the suspect revealed that he used to withdraw Rs 20,000 from each card and had duped at least 50 persons,” said a police officer. The police said he led a lavish life and spent money on gadgets. He had purchased a second hand Swift car for Rs 2.40 lakh and a motorcycle for Rs 70,000.
Monu learnt the art of duping people from a person in UP. Bablu of Saharanpur used to provide blocked ATM cards of victims, who were duped earlier. The same cards were exchanged with ATM cards of new victims.
The police said they had footage of a CCTV camera in which the suspect was seen duping a victim.
He used to identify gullible people and used to exchange their ATM card with a similar card on the pretext of helping them. Later, he used to withdraw money from the victim’s account. In February, he had withdrawn Rs 20,000 from a teacher’s account by swapping the ATM card. He also withdrew Rs 13,000 from another person’s account earlier this week at an ATM booth in Ram Darbar.
