The PGI Director also emphasised the significance of values that make the foundation of medical profession.

The day is observed to celebrate the life of legendary physician and second Chief Minister of West Bengal Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, also known as Dr BC Roy. Dr Roy was a Bharat Ratna awardee who dedicated his entire life to emphasise the values and ethics of medicine as a profession. Dr Roy was born on July 1, 1882. “Today, we must remember and commemorate the contributions of medical fraternity to society. Doctors have made relentless efforts towards improving the overall health status of our country. All of us should strive to provide compassionate and affordable care for all. We must remember and follow our basic Hippocratic Oath that states first and foremost principle is to do no harm,” he said.

“Doctor-patient relation is sacred and based on mutual trust and respect. This relationship must be strengthened as it forms the backbone of medical care. Other than treating patients, doctors should also play a positive leadership role in the community,” he said.

“All of us must strive to maintain the honour and integrity of our profession. We must continue to advance science and work for the betterment of our society, country and humanity at large,” he said.
