Gunfight broke out between the militants and the government forces in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday, police said.

“Exchange of fire between security forces & militants at higher reaches of Tral Awantipora. Further details will follow,” police said on Twitter.

Earlier, reports said that the gunfight broke out after the forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) in Gulshanpora area of Tral.

“As the forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight,” said an official.

Meanwhile, youth took to streets and staged protests as soon as the news of gunfight spread in the town.

An eye witness said the forces resorted to arial firing after the youth pelted them with stones.
