Rs 7.80-crore gold seized from SUV

Mohali, April 2: The local police seized 26 kg of gold, worth around Rs 7.80 crore, from an SUV at a naka in Dera Bassi near here today.

Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar said four persons — Rakesh Kumar of Kardi village in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, Balbir Chand, a resident of Dobad Kallan village, also in Hamirpur, Sanjay Kumar of Baliana village in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, and Jaswant Singh of Gewda village in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan — had been detained in this connection.

The SSP said the suspects were travelling in a Mahindra XUV when they were intercepted at a naka in the Dera Bassi subdivision area.

“During a search of the vehicle, we recovered 26 kg of gold in the shape of bricks. During preliminary quizzing, the suspects claimed that the gold had been imported from South Africa. However, they could not produce any document or proof of the ownership of the gold,” said Bhullar.

The SUV has been impounded by the police.

“We have registered a case in this connection at the Lalru police station,” said the SSP, adding that information in this regard had also been provided to Income Tax Department and the GST Department for necessary action.
