Child, 4 others injured as gas cylinder catches fire

Chandigarh, February 3: Five persons, including a 12-year-old child, received burn injuries after an LPG cylinder caught fire at a house in Dhanas village here this morning. The gas that had accumulated in the room led to a blast.

A total of five persons identified as Ram Singh (36), his wife Rashmi (26), mother Sona Devi (50) and two neighbours, Santosh Das (19) and Zharkhandi Das (12), received burn injuries.

The police said information was received that there is a cylinder blast near Shama Dhaba, village Dhanas. The police reached the spot and found that the incident took place in room no 32 on the first floor of the building number 149.

The police said Ram Singh changed the cylinder in the morning after which he was unable to fix the regulator, following which he called his neighbour Santosh. Santosh fixed the regulator. However, gas continued to leak, which went unnoticed.

When Rashmi lighted a matchstick to cook the food, the cylinder caught fire. The gas accumulated in the room led to a blast. People immediately informed the police after which the injured persons were rushed to the PGI, where they are undergoing treatment. The police said Ram Singh received more burn injuries. A DDR has been lodged at the Sarangpur police station.
