Srinagar, Feb 4: Security forces on Monday launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Kulgam, where clashes erupted after people hit the streets trying to disrupt the operation.
Official sources said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint CASO following a tip-off about the presence of militants at Tarigam, Kulgam early this morning.
All the exit points were sealed and house to house searches were launched and no contact has been established with any militant so far.
People, mostly youths hit the streets raising slogan and trying to disrupt the operation.
However, security forces and state police personnel deployed immediately swung into action and resorted to lathicharge.
Clashes between demonstrators and security forces were going on when the reports last came in, they added.
