Storm leaves trees uprooted, plunges Chandigarh into darkness for several hours

Chandigarh, June 4: The tricity of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula on Monday night witnessed a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by high-velocity winds that brought respite from the scorching heat but left behind a trail of destruction.

The thunderstorm brought the mercury down, which otherwise was nearing 45 degrees Celsius. It, however, left trees uprooted at some places and tree branches fell onto roads leading to blockades and damaging vehicles in several sectors. No loss of life and property has been reported so far. 

The thunderstorm plunged Chandigarh into complete darkness as there was no power supply for several hours.

Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh have been witnessing intense heatwave conditions for the past several days, with the mercury remaining above the 40-degree mark in most parts of the states.

The Meteorological Department had forecast some relief from the heat from Tuesday onwards.
