_*World Braille Day Celebrated at Shopian*_
_SHOPIAN JANUARY 04:_
An impressive function was organised at MFI Pinjoora by Social Welfare Department to celebrate the World Braille Day. The day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the contribution of Louis Braille who invented the Braille, a tactile system consisting of a series of raised dots that can be read and written with the fingers by people who are blind or whose eyesight is not sufficient to access printed material.
Tehsil Social Welfare Officer Farhana Tak, officials of the department, children of MFI Pinjoora and persons suffering from blindness participated in the function wherein they were apprised about the challenges being faced by the blind persons and importance of Braille in learning to read and write.
Speaking on the occasion TSWO said a lot of technological and educational transformations have occurred since Braille was invented almost 200 years ago. She said in order for an individual to enjoy rational freedom and security, and to have equal opportunities in society, one must be literate. There is no alternative to the ability to read, and therefore no digital alternative can replace Braille wholly, she added.
She impressed that Braille has become ubiquitous, be it a daily living gadget or a high technology computer system, it is engulfing every facet of our lives. This in turn is making it easier for a blind to locomote independently in his environment.
