New Delhi, February 5: The Supreme Court on Tuesday commenced hearing on pleas of the probe agency CBI in the Saradha chit fund scam case.
Attorney General KK Venugopal opened argument on behalf of the CBI, alleging destruction of evidence in the chit fund scam case.
The attorney general said the Kolkata police had provided doctored call data records.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar was heading the SIT set up by the West Bengal government to probe the chit fund scam, the attorney general said.
The Supreme Court said it might ask the Kolkata police chief to appear for investigation and would issue notice on the CBI’s contempt plea.
Senior advocate AM Singhvi, appearing for the Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar, alleged that the CBI’s action was meant to score points.
The apex court directed Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to make himself available before the CBI, and faithfully cooperate in the scam probe.
No coercive steps, including the arrest of Rajeev Kumar, would take place, the SC said.
The SC directed West Bengal chief secretary, DGP and Kolkata Police commissioner to file replies on the contempt pleas moved by the CBI against them.
Replies in the contempt petition filed by the CBI had to be placed by the West Bengal chief secretary and DGP on or before February 18, the SC said. PTI
