New Delhi, September 6: Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district Sasikanth Senthil on Friday resigned from the Indian Administrative Service, saying that it was “unethical” for him to continue in his position in the government when the “building blocks” of India’s democracy were being “compromised”.

“I have taken this decision as I feel that it is unethical for me to continue as a civil servant in the government when the fundamental building blocks of our diverse democracy are being compromised in an unprecedented manner,” Senthil said in a letter.

Senthil said he felt “strongly” that the “coming days” will present “extremely difficult challenges to the basic fabric of our nation”. He added, that he would be “better off outside the IAS” to continue his work of “making life better for all.”

In the letter, he also said: “It simply cannot be business as usual anymore.”

Senthil called the decision a “personal one”, and said that it had nothing to do with his current profile.

Senthil is not the first IAS officer to resign from his position. In August, IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan had resigned, stating that he did so as the denial of “freedom of expression” to the people of Jammu and Kashmir was not acceptable to him.
