After youth is run over, ITI students confront cops; scores injured

Karnal, April 12:Agitated over the death of an ITI student who was run over by a roadways bus at ITI Chowk on National Highway-44 here on Thursday, scores of his fellow students protested here on Friday.

They also pelted the police with stones leading to injuries to around 30 policemen. Four of them are being treated at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital here.The police fired teargas shells to disperse the students and also fired in the air to control the situation that is tense but under control. Several students were also injured.

Following the police action students entered the ITI premises to take shelter, where they were chased by the police. The police have rounded up around 100 students.SP Surinder Singh Bhoria, along with the police force, is at the spot. Traffic on the NH-44 has been halted to avoid any untoward incident. The institute principal and staff were detained for questioning and released later.

Twenty-year-old Ankit was crushed to death while he was trying to board the bus. Students alleged that the adamant attitude of the roadways bus drivers led to such mishaps.
