The world may be going gaga over the tunes on the popular TikTok app but Tamil Nadu government isn’t much impressed by it. Apparently there are some politicians in Tamil Nadu who see the app as a threat to the culture as well as the law and order set up in the state.
Tamil Nadu Information Technology minister M Manikandan on Tuesday announced in the assembly that he would request the state government for a ban on TikTok. According to a report from The Hindu, S. Ramadoss from Pattali Makkal Katchi party had also sought a ban on the app last month saying that users were uploading suggestive sexual dance choreography” on it.
Manikandan’s announcement was a response to the Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi MLA M. Thamimun Ansari who also wants a ban on the app. Ansari says that the app is addictive and encourages pornography.
This is not the first time that the popular Chinese app has found itself in troubled waters. Earlier in January this year, four people from Virudhunagar district were arrested for creating a fun video clip through TikTok app that mocked the cops at the police station itself.
Last year in October, a 24-year-old man from Chennai jumped before a train and committed suicide. Reportedly, the man was bullied for dressing up in women attires over the TikTok app.
According to an HT report, the Chennai Police recently busted a flesh trade racket which was operated through morphed pictures of women downloaded from the TikTok and using them to get customers.
TikTok which has a huge user base in India has a major portion of its userbase come between the 16 and 24 years of age group. The increasing popularity has also opened the gates for hate speech on the platform.
