Bandipora/Ganderbal, May 13: Students of government girls higher secondary school Bandipora on Monday took out a protest rally against the rape of a minor girl in Sumbal on May 08.
Witnesses said that the students marched from Plan Bandipora to Nowpora chowk, raising slogans to demand exemplary punishment to the accused.
The protestors later dispersed off peacefully near Nowpora Chowk.
The protests were also held in Sumbal main chowk against the rape incident.
Witnesses said that the Traders Federation Sumbal and people from several localities of Sumbal including Nowgam, Inderkoot, Najin, Gadkhud and Tularzoo assembled in Sumbal and held a protest.
The protesters raised slogans, demanding justice for the rape victim and capital punishment to the guilty.
Meanwhile, DIG North Kashmir Mohd. Sulieman Choudhary visited Sumbal and is holding a meeting with the village elders, asking them to maintain calm.
The students of the central university of Kashmir and government degree Ganderbal also took out a peaceful protest march against the rape incident.
The students demanded stringent punishment to the rapist.
Meanwhile, all shops and business establishments remained closed in Beehama, Duderhama and Qamaria chowk while thin public transport was witnessed in the entire district.
