Driving licence must for rickshaw-pullers in city

Chandigarh, July 13:The Administration has  made the driving  licence  and registration mandatory  for rickshaw-pullers in the  city.

Each rickshaw will have to affix a number plate, to be issued by the Municipal Corporation. In a bid to check reckless use of rickshaws, animal carts and rehris, the Administration has approved the bylaws proposed by the MC. The Chandigarh Cycle/Rickshaws/Loading Rehri/Animal Powered Cart (Regulation and Control) Bylaws, 2019, are aimed at checking accidents on roads. 

The UT has notified the bylaws, which will be made applicable after seeking suggestions from people. 

A fee of Rs 600 has been fixed for registration, while Rs 300 will have to be paid as the driving licence fee for 15 years. The licence to ply rickshaws and rehris will only be issued to bona fide residents of the city, above the age of 18. The maximum weight limit on rickshaws and rehris has been fixed at 150 kg. 

Licence holders will have to follow directions of the police and traffic rules. 

The police and authorised MC officials have been given the power to impound rickshaws in case these are found violating the rules. 

A fee has been fixed for getting impounded rickshaws released. The violators will be charged Rs 300 for the first offence, Rs 400 for the second and Rs 500 for the third. According to an estimate, there are around 5,000 to 6,000 rickshaws in the city.

Will have to affix number plate

  • Each rickshaw will have to affix a number plate, to be issued by the Municipal Corporation

Only 2 allowed on bicycle 

While no registration or driving licence is required for a cycle, rules have been framed and restrictions imposed. Only two persons are allowed on a cycle. The cycle rider will have to follow the traffic rules. Children above the age of 10 will be eligible to ride a cycle without a guardian.
