Shopian shuts on fourth straight day, Internet suspended

Shopian district in southern Kashmir remained shut on fourth straight day today to mourn the killings of Al Badr commander Zeenat ul Islam and his aide in a gunfight with the forces.

All shops and other commercial establishments are closed in the district while a skeletal movement of traffic was witnessed on the roads, witnesses said.

Islam and his aide Shakeel Ahmad were shot dead by the forces in a brief shootout in Yaripora area of the neighbouring Kulgam district on Saturday evening.

Tens of thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of Islam and Ahmad on Sunday at their native villages of Sugan and Chillipora respectively.

Meanwhile, Internet continues to remain suspended in Shopian district for fourth straight day. The service was suspended soon after the news of Islam’s killing started doing the rounds on Saturday evening.
