New Delhi, December 16: A day after severe unrest broke out across Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act and a students’ stir turned violent and bloody, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi called for peaceful protests against the legislation.
In a tweet this morning, Rahul said fascists must be fought with Satyagraha.
“The CAB & NRC are weapons of mass polarisation unleashed by fascists on India. The best defence against these dirty weapons is peaceful, non violent Satyagraha. I stand in solidarity with all those protesting peacefully against the CAB & NRC,” he admonished students.
Protests by Jamia Millia Islamia students against CAA turned violent yesterday with Delhi police entering the varsity campus and unleashing force on students to contain a potentially riotous situation.
Later, last night, JNU students union joined Jamia protesters outside Delhi police headquarters in ITO, Delhi and sat in there for several hours demanding answers on the whereabouts of several Jamia students.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh today approached the Supreme Court demanding urgent listing of his plea over growing unrest around CAA.
Ramesh’s plea will be heard on Wednesday. Ramesh, a former union minister, tweeted today: “Given the urgent situation that has developed around the rushed & insidious Citizenship Amendment Act, I approached the Hon’ble Supreme Court to hear my matter urgently.”
The Hon’ble judges have agreed to list my challenge to the same on Wednesday i.e. day after tomorrow.”
