New Delhi, December 16: The Delhi Police has rejected all charges of having used excessive and disproportionate force against students of Jamia Millia Islamia University who were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Sunday.

The Delhi Police has claimed many rumours are being spread around about the police action.

“The police did not fire upon any student. We are a professional force and used minimum force to control the situation,” MS Randhawa, PRO of Delhi Police said during a press conference.

He claimed that nearly 30 cops were injured in Sunday’s protest that turned violent. The injured cops include ACP and DCP-rank officers. “Three SHOs have suffered fractures and one cop is in the ICU,” Randhawa claimed.

However, earlier in the day Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University said the Delhi Police barged into the university campus without any permission and attacked students besides firing teargas shells. The VC said the university will soon be filing an FIR against the Delhi Police.

When asked about these allegations, Delhi Police PRO said, “Some cops did enter the university campus. But it was to nab some miscreants. We are trying to push back the protesters.”

Many students have accused the Delhi Police of high-handedness and beating them up.

So far the police have filed two cases, one each of arson and rioting.

“The crime branch will investigate the cases. We urge people not to believe on rumours. Action will be taken against those who were involved in the illegal act. Students shouldn’t worry and be mislead,” the Delhi Police PRO said.

The police have also denied allegation of cops firing upon protesting students of Jamia Millia Islamia University. “No firing took place and there are no casualties,” the police said.
