Panchkula, May 16: With the arrest of dreaded snatcher Kavi Bisht (22), the crime branch of the local police here today claimed to have solved 11 cases of snatchings in Chandigarh as well as in Panchkula.
The police have also arrested his companion Atul Thakur and recovered the scooty used in the crime.Sharing information with mediapersons today, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kamal Deep Goyal said the crime branch had got registration number of the scooty from the footage of the CCTV cameras. After tracing the number the police managed to catch the suspect, Kavi, who was a drug addict, he added.
The suspects were drug addicts and purchased the contraband from New Delhi, he said. The suspect used to commit crime for purchasing drugs, he added.
Both Kavi and Atul had committed three snatchings in the city, including grabbing a purse from an elderly woman containing Rs 7,000, a gold chain and earrings on May 11 in Sector 21. The suspects had pushed the woman thus injuring her seriously. Similarly, on April 21 and May 9 they had snatched purses from two women in Sector 7 and Sector 4 in the MDC area, respectively.
Crime branch Inspector Aman Kumar said eight cases of snatchings were registered against Kavi Bisht in Chandigarh. He said 16 snatchings were reported in the first five months of this year in the city out of which 10 cases were solved by the police. Last year, 31 snatching cases were registered during the same period, he added.
