Haryana Police suspend Olympian Jai Bhagwan

Hisar, June 21:The Haryana Police on Thursday placed Arjuna Award winning boxer Jai Bhagwan, an Inspector, under suspension following a departmental inquiry over his alleged misbehaviour with a hotel manager in Sirsa town.

DSP Aryan Chaudhary said Jai Bhagwan, posted recently as SHO of Rori police station with additional charge of Kalanwali police station, entered into an argument with the hotel manager on June 16.Bhagwan, accompanied by a woman, had gone to the hotel to hire a room when its manager demanded their ID proofs. The manager objected to the document furnished by the woman, leading to alleged misbehaviour by Bhagwan. The DSP said SP Arun Singh had placed Inspector Jai Bhagwan under suspension on the basis of a preliminary inquiry. “A departmental inquiry has been initiated against him and further action will be taken on the basis of its report,” he said.

Police spokesperson Surjeet Singh said the hotel’s CCTV footage showed Inspector Jai Bhagwan misbehaving with the manager and slapping him. Manager Vijender lodged a complaint with the Sirsa police and an inquiry was initiated.

Bhagwan, who won a bronze medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and participated in the 2012 Olympics, was also suspended in 2015 on charges of taking bribe from a businessman of Adampur Mandi in Hisar.

During his posting with Tohana police in Fatehabad district in 2018, Bhagwan was accused of assaulting a woman Inspector at the Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner’s office.
