New Delhi, June 22: Remains of human skeletons were discovered behind the compound of a hospital in Muzaffarpur in Bihar where at least 108 children have died due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) or Japanese encephalitis.

Pictures posted by news agency ANI show deformed human bones and broken skull fragments lying behind the compound of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur.

Commenting on the development, SKMCH medical superintendent SK Shahi said the skeletal remains could have been disposed off by the post-mortem department of the hospital. He admitted that it should be done with a more “humane approach”.

He said, Post-mortem department is under the principal but it should be done with a humane approach. I’ll talk to the principal and ask him to constitute an investigating committee.”

An investigation team visited the spot where the human skeletal remains were spotted.

While the hospital has been criticised severely after 108 patients suffering from AES died during treatment, the discovery of skeletons is another blow to the hospital.

Official data suggests that at least 128 children have died due to AES, which causes brain fever or Chamki, in Muzaffarpur district. In total, more than 140 children have died in Bihar.
