Jammu and Kashmir: Two dead after massive landslide buries truck in Doda

Jammu and Kashmir: Two persons died after a landslide buried their truck around midnight in Piyakul village on Thathri-Kilhotran road of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

An official said the truck bearing registration number JK 02AC  5185 was on its way to Kishtwar from Gandoh when it was hit by a massive landslide.

Sub-divisional magistrate Thathri Mohd Anwar Banday said a rescue operation was immediately launched after received the information of the landslide.

The bodies of the truck driver, identified as Shahzad Ahmed (27) of Chirala and his associate Mohd Aarif (22) of Kishtwar were recovered around 5.30am on Saturday morning, from the debris after a prolonged rescue operation, he said.

Quoting preliminary reports, he said the truck got stuck while it was crossing the muddy patch of the road around mid-night. “The driver and his associate apparently came out of the vehicle to clear the debris but suddenly a massive landslide rolled down from the hill, burying the truck and the conductor under the debris,” he said, adding that the driver was hit by a stone and was dragged by the debris into the nallah.

He said the debris has been cleared from the road and the bodies of the duo were sent to Trauma Hospital Thathri for legal formalities.
