Panchkula, March 25: A Chandigarh Police constable, Mamta Yadav (29), was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Panchkula. The incident took place yesterday.
Mamta, who lived in Panchkula and hailed from Sonepat, was on her way from Panchkula to Chandigarh on a Honda Activa when the accident took place near the Mansa Devi Complex (MDC) T-point. Around 1.30 pm, as she took a turn from the MDC T-point and reached Pir Baba Mazaar, a car hit her from the rear side. She fell on the road. The car driver sped away.
The mishap triggered a traffic jam on the road. A traffic policeman, Jagtar Singh, who was posted at the MDC T-point, reached the spot. “Army personnel took her in their vehicle to the Command Hospital, Chandimandir,” he told media. Otherwise, accident victims are taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula. Jagtar Singh, who saw her being taken to the hospital, said she was wearing a helmet and suffered injuries below the waist.
As the police reached the Command Hospital to record her statement, doctors advised them against it as her condition was critical. The woman succumbed to her injuries at night.
On Jagtar Singh’s statement, a case of rash driving (Section 279 of the IPC) and causing death by negligence (Section 304 A of the IPC) was registered at the Sector 5 police station, Panchkula.
