Chandigarh, July 26: In a major step towards battling parking chaos, the UT Administration has finalised the parking policy in which the main focus is on promoting public transport.
Sources said a high-level meeting of officers of various departments was held today to discuss suggestions received on parking. Various associations had given suggestions to check the parking chaos. The meeting was chaired by UT Adviser Manoj Kumar Parida.The aim of the policy is to encourage the use of alternative modes of transport. It has recommended car pooling in the city by using a mobile app. The Administration will formulate a system for safe car pooling.
All offices having over 50 employees will have to provide the bus service to them. Parking in sectors is posing a challenge to the Administration. To check the chaos, it has been recommended to allow parking in marla houses after removing the front wall or by allowing a bigger gate. It has also been recommended that space be identified for community parking in sectors. Vacant space in schools and community centres will also be identified for parking purposes at night.
The policy also seeks the involvement of residents welfare associations (RWAs) in managing parking in sectors and also plans to empower them to impose penalty on violators. The RWAs will be given the responsibility of managing parking in vacant areas. The MC has been asked to rationalise parking charges on the basis of the land cost.
The sources said after approval from the UT Administrator, objections would be sought from the public regarding the policy. The option of underground parking will also be explored in sectors.
The city, having the highest per capita vehicles, has posed a major challenge to the Administration. The situation in some southern sectors has reached a saturation level where parking outside residential areas has created chaos.
