New Delhi, March 27: India has engraved its name as space power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday while addressing the nation on television.

Till date only the US, Russia and China had this achievement; today India had managed that, he said.

“Some time back, our scientists have struck down LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite,” he said.

“It is an important achievement for the country that we have been able to do it with ASAT. I congratulate all the scientists associated with DRDI,” he said.

He would broadcast an address to the nation at 11.45 am on Wednesday, he had earlier said in a Twitter message.

“I would be addressing the nation at around 11.45 am to noon with an important message,” he said. “Do watch the address on television, radio or social media.” He gave no details.

It is not expected to be a policy announcement; perhaps it has something to do with national security.

As the country awaits the “important announcement”, the social media is rife with speculation.

A YouTube link has also been shared with a few media houses.

A cabinet meeting has taken place following a Cabinet Committee on Security.  It is expected that Modi would speak as soon as the cabinet meet gets over, television reports said.

The last time Modi addressed the nation was on November 8, 2016, when he announced demonetisation or the overnight ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
