Rs 75 lakh seized from vehicle in Lalru

Lalru: An amount of Rs 75 lakh was seized from a vehicle here on Wednesday amid restrictions imposed under the model code of conduct for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the police said.

The Scorpio, bearing a Chandigarh registration number, was intercepted near Sirsini village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Lalru police station, around noon during a routine check, said Simranjit Singh, DSP, Dera Bassi.

The driver of the vehicle, Parmod Sangwan of Rajasthan, and his accomplice Sonu Singh, a resident of Rewari, Haryana, were detained and later handed over to the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department (Investigation Wing) for further investigation.

The DSP said as part of stepped up vigil in view of the coming Lok Sabha elections, the police had laid a naka near Sirsini village in Lalru today. A Scorpio, which was coming from the Ambala side, was signalled to stop and during checking, the police recovered Rs 75 lakh.

The DSP said the vehicle occupants could not produce proper documents and failed to give convincing answers to queries of the police.

“The Income Tax Department authorities are being informed and suitable action being taken. The source and proposed destination of the cash is being ascertained,” the DSP said.
