Chandigarh, June 28:Monsoon is expected to hit the tricity in the first or beginning of second week of July.A Met official said this time, monsoon, which normally came around June 29, was delayed by one week due to cyclone Vayu, which disrupted its further progress northward.

Besides, tricity, this time, faces a 20-25 per cent rainfall deficit. Weathermen reasoned due to western disturbance, proper heating could not be possible. Thus, rainfall deficit is likely.

It is likely to be below normal monsoon. Normal rainfall in monsoon is 839 mm in Chandigarh.

The weather condition will possibly hit crops, lead to shortage of water and more usage of power.

“Though, 20-25 per cent rainfall deficit is expected this monsoon, if it rains well in July, then things will be fine for crops. If July receives good rainfall, then it would not matter how much it rains in August for crops. Next month is crucial for agriculture,” said Surender Pal, Director, Chandigarh Meteorological Department.

As per Met forecast, first two weeks of July are expected to receive less rain and the following two weeks will see improvement.

On the remaining days of June, no rain is expected and occasional thunderstorm could be there. Significant rain will be witnessed after July 1. The monsoon is expected to last till the third week of September.

Officials said recent trends were showing that the monsoon might hit from July 4 or 5. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Chandigarh is expected to be 41 degree C for the next two days.
