New Delhi, January 29: The Centre on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking modification of the top court’s March 2003 verdict in order to restore surplus undisputed land to its rightful owner–Ram Janambhumi Nyas.

The Centre’s plea was filed on Monday after 3 pm.

The Constitution Bench hearing the cross-appeals against the September 30, 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict on Ayodhya land dispute scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled in view of unavailability of Justice SA Bobde. The Centre has sought permission to return the 67-acre land–which it had acquired around the 2.77-acre disputed Ram Janambhumi-Babri Masjid site–to its original owners.

The Centre said the Nyas had demanded return of excess land acquired in 1993 to its original owners.

A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court had in 1994 in Ismail Faruqui’s case upheld the acquisition of 67-acre land surrounding the disputed site.
