Karnal: The police have booked 27 persons on the charge of cheating IDBI Bank to the tune of Rs2.61 crore by producing fake documents for agricultural loans.
The police said each of them had applied for individual agricultural loans in 2017 and did not pay their instalments on time. The police started investigation into how the loans were approved by the Sector 12 branch of the bank despite forged documents.
In preliminary investigation, it came to light that the accused had got red ink removed from their land documents. The red line indicated that the owner had already taken loan on land, said SHO Mohan Lal.
He said an FIR had been registered on the basis of the complaint of the bank manager under Sections 406, 420 and 120-B of the IPC against 27 persons from the district.
He said the involvement of advocates could not be ruled out as the documents which had been produced in the bank were prepared by lawyers.
“The accused cheated the bank by hiding the fact that they had taken loans on the same land from other banks. They had produced their land documents by making changes,” said the SHO.
