Ness Wadia, business tycoon and owner of IPL team Kings XI Punjab, has been sentenced to a two-year prison term in Japan for possessing drugs.
According to a report in the Financial Times, Ness Wadia was found in possession of 25 grams of cannabis resin in March, for which he has been sentenced.
The report further states that Ness Wadia was arrested in Japan in March.
Ness Wadia is the son and heir of Nusli Wadia’s business empire, the Wadia Group.
According to the Financial Times report, Ness Wadia was found in possession of 25 gram drugs at the New Chitose Airport in the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
India Today has reached out to the Wadia Group for comments on Ness Wadia’s arrest. The story will be updated once there is a statement.
The report also states that at the time of arrest, Ness Wadia admitted to possessing the cannabis, which he said was meant for personal consumption.
Wadia spent a period in detention before his indictment on March 20 and an undisclosed period of detention before a court hearing.
In 2014, Ness Wadia was accused by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta of molestation. The two were in a relationship and co-owns the Kings XI IPL team. The case was later withdrawn by Zinta.
The Wadia empire has many units, which include Bombay Dyeing, Bombay Burman Trading, biscuit giant Britannia Industries to budget airline GoAir and shares in IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab with the total market valuation of its listed entities standing at $13.1 billion.
