Ludhiana March 5

After a nearly week-long protest by lawyers, the Khanna Sadar police have registered an FIR against Ludhiana STF inspector Harbans Singh for thrashing lawyer Varun Gupta.

Other cops named in the case are Constable Navkamaljot Singh, Senior constable Gurvinder Singh and PHG Jaswant Singh.

A case under section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), section 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act has been registered against the policemen.

A cross-case under section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and section 186 (obstructing a public servant from discharge of his duty) has also been registered.

Notably, the FIR was registered only after the lawyers approached the High Court which recently directed Ludhiana IG Jaskaran Singh to submit a report on the action taken by the state by March 5. Lawyers have also been blocking the GT road outside the mini secretariat since the past six days.

The lawyer had alleged that Harbans had beaten him up and misbehaved with his father near Manji Sahib Gurdwara outside a dhabha on February 25. CCTV footage had also reportedly captured the crime.

Lawyers are now demanding that Harbans should also be suspended with immediate effect.
