Militant killed in encounter with security forces in J-K’s Awantipora

Srinagar, May 6: A militant was killed in an ongoing operation in South Kashmir’s Awantipora sub-district, the Army said.

An encounter raged between militants and security forces at Shaar-Shaali in Khrew on after joint teams launched a cordon and search operation following an input about the presence of militants.

“As security forces zeroed in on a suspected area, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter,” a police officer said.

Srinagar-based defence spokesman said a militant was killed and a joint operation is in progress.

Meanwhile, a massive search operation is going on since Tuesday evening in the native village of militant commander Riyaz Naikoo. Security forces had cordoned Beighpora village in Awantipora and looking for possible militant hideouts.

On Tuesday evening, a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was arrested in Tral area of the sub-district.

“A JeM militant was arrested at Satura village of Tral area on Tuesday evening. The joint team of police and security forces apprehended the militant at Satura crossing in an ambush,” a police spokesman said.

“On questioning him, an AK-56 rifle, five AK magazines and Chinese grenades were recovered,” he added.
