Srinagar, June 9: J&K Police and Army have recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition close to the Line of Control in Keran sector of Kupwara district.

Police said the recovery was made on Monday following a reliable input following which a joint search operation was launched by Kupwara Police and Army’s 6 Rashtriya Rifles in Keran village and forest areas along the LoC.

“During the combing operation, a large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from a weapons dump,” Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.

The recoveries included five AK-47 rifles, 15 AK magazines, 443 rounds, two under barrel grenade launchers, 57 UBGL grenades, 15 hand grenades, six 9mm pistols, 12 nine-mm pistol magazines, 77 nine-mm pistol rounds and two AK slings.

“With this joint operation, the security forces deployed in Kupwara have successfully foiled the nefarious designs of Pakistan-based terror operatives to smuggle illegal weapons into the Valley and spread terrorism,” Kumar said.

Kupwara SSP Shriram Ambarker said the recovered weapons were meant for the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group.

Keran is a key infiltration route for the militants. In April, a fierce gunfight took place between the infiltrators and security forces at Rangdori forest in Keran sector which had left five members of the elite special forces and an equal number of militants dead.
